Local builders, electricians, roofers, engineers and specialist contractors are being encouraged to compete for a share of around £80m of work across North Lincolnshire over the next four years.
North Lincolnshire Council is making it easier for smaller local businesses to compete alongside larger contractors, opening up opportunities ranging from everyday repairs and maintenance to major construction and road improvement projects.
The work includes maintaining public buildings, improving roads, installing renewable energy systems and adapting homes to help older and disabled residents live independently.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “North Lincolnshire has some fantastic builders, electricians, roofers, engineers and specialist contractors. These are skilled local people running businesses, creating jobs and contributing to the local economy every day.
“We want to make sure they have every opportunity to compete for work right here in North Lincolnshire.
“When we invest in improving roads, maintaining buildings or delivering new facilities, we want local businesses to benefit too – that means giving smaller firms a fair chance to compete alongside larger contractors, while making sure residents get quality work and value for money.”
The council currently spends more than £20m a year on construction, repairs and highways work, with the new arrangements opening up potential opportunities worth around £80m over four years.
To make the work accessible to businesses of different sizes, contracts will be divided into 14 specialist categories, covering everything from small roofing and electrical repairs to construction projects worth millions.
Local businesses have helped shape the approach, with feedback from contractors used to make sure smaller firms have opportunities to compete.
Cllr Neil Poole, deputy leader and cabinet member for roads, waste and flooding, said: “We are encouraging residents to back local businesses, and the council should lead by example.
“Every pound we invest should work as hard as possible for North Lincolnshire – improving local facilities, supporting skilled jobs and helping businesses grow.
“By opening up these opportunities to more local firms, we can support the local economy while continuing to deliver value for taxpayers.”
The opportunities will cover building, mechanical and electrical work, roofing, demolition, renewable energy, road repairs and resurfacing, as well as adaptations to help people remain independent in their own homes.
The new arrangements will begin in April 2027, with businesses able to compete for opportunities across the different trades and services.
