One of Lincoln’s most recognisable historic buildings has been given a new lease of life, with visitors now able to stay inside the city’s famous ‘Wonky House’.
No. 40 Michaelgate has officially opened its doors as holiday accommodation following an extensive programme of repair and restoration, giving visitors the chance to experience a unique piece of Lincoln’s history from the heart of the Cathedral Quarter.
Dating back to the 16th century, the Grade II listed timber-framed building is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks, with its charmingly irregular shape making it instantly recognisable.
The property was previously let as a holiday home by the National Trust before being returned to two separate dwellings as part of the latest restoration project. No. 40, the Wonky House, is now available to book, with No. 42 set to follow once its restoration and furnishing are complete.
The comprehensive programme of works has helped secure the future of both historic properties, with particular attention given to the timber frame of No. 40. Historic timber was found to have been severely damaged by death watch beetle, which had been hidden behind modern cementitious panels.
The restoration of the two properties has included repairs to the timber frame, new sash windows, a renewed dormer, a brick buttress to support the building and a small extension. The historic timber beams have also been treated using traditional lime wash, helping to protect them against future insect infestation.
Alongside the conservation work, the property has been brought up to modern standards with a new kitchen and shower room, an air source heat pump, and full redecoration and furnishing throughout.
The £570,000 restoration project was supported by a £350,000 grant from the Architectural Heritage Fund, a £110,000 grant from Historic England, and City of Lincoln Council, which contributed £86,000 towards the cost of the works.
The building was saved from demolition in the 1930s, but in recent years had been at risk due to its precarious position on the steep slope of Michaelgate. The restoration has now helped secure its future while finding a sustainable new use for this important piece of Lincoln’s heritage.
